recycling event

Just in case anyone’s looking:

Sounds like a great recycling event at the Newtown Creek  WWTP visitor center and a chance to meet David Hurd,  from the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.  And a great opportunity to check out the plant if you missed the class visit!

Case study pamphlets

Case study pamphlets are up on the front page of this site! For each case study, you’ll find links to a downloadable PDF and to Lulu where a bound and printed copy can be purchased. The series will be rounded out by an introductory “Course Files” pamphlet and a closing pamphlet, “Urban Research”. These last two pamphlets will be posted next week very soon! (Sorry for the delay. As I am using the urban research pamphlet as a template for future urban media labs, I’m taking some extra time with some behind the scenes formatting…)

Final grades have been submitted to the New School, and you should have all by now received feedback on your work via email over the course of this week and next. Please expect a message from me to your New School account in the coming days. Each of you should have by now received feedback on your case studies in the form of embedded comments in the PDF document itself.

NYC CONDOM

by Tassos Lockbird

Today I went to the NYC Department of Health to speak with the Director of the Condoms & Materials Distribution Department. Along with having a really interesting conversation concerning various aspects of this initiative, Jennifer Medina -the Director- gave me something to bring to class and share! :)

macbar | plastic is a “femme fatale”; so beautiful, yet so bad

by Tassos Lockbird

last week a friend of mine took me to this nevertheless fun place that makes specifically mac and cheese, but many kinds. what is even more impressive is their takeaway packaging. so pretty, so shiny, so…useless. or…is it art? because underneath, it says “designed by Ran Lerner”! I don’t know, and I don’t even think it matters. what matters is that even though I have always played devil’s advocate and defended “plastic”, this time [it was too late to say no to the packaging when I saw it!], I was stunned. the amounts of plastic started building up…

flushing meadows ~ corona park | a forgotten circus

by Tassos Lockbird

Not so long ago, a friend from Greece was visiting me and wanted to go to “some places”, as she had told me. Being an architect, she had chosen some interesting and less mainstream sights, one of them being the Flushing Meadows – Corona Park, created in 1939 for New York’s World’s Fair and hosting it again in 1964.  Now, it seems like a deserted theme park in the middle of nowhere. The peculiar character of the place though, has an overwhelming, yet beautifully enchanting effect. Wasted space, wasted dreams.

NEWTOWN CREEK

by Tassos Lockbird

…because, better late than never…

…here are a few pictures from our visit to Newtown Creek!

Definitely one of my personal highlights of this semester.

5.11 last class

Hi all, A few quick reminders for tomorrow:

– Case study groups will be asked to spend 10 min each to update on work progress. Please bring visuals on USB drive, or have ready to bring up online.

– I will bring a little wine + food (in as little packaging as I can!) In the interest of reuse, please also feel free to bring any food you might have and want to share, but absolutely no obligation, and certainly do not buy anything.

-Finally, links to case study guidelines and recently posted FAQs are above.

See you soon!

NYC’s Festival of Ideas

I got a chance to go to the Festival Ideas this morning. Very cool local businesses + organizations, green projects, and workshops to check out/get involved with. As well, you can drop off your e-waste or food scraps for compost. One workshop that caught my attention was the Upcycle Art Workshop where you can learn how to turn plastic bottles into beautiful objects. I love the idea of “Upcycle”. And of course there was performance artist Edith Raw’s “White Trash” piece, walking around wearing a headpiece made of various plastics and a dress made of clear plastic garbage bags filled with trash. Here are some highlights from the festival:

This is a pretty excellent anti-litter PSA I think, by David Lynch — thought I’d share.

Urban Map

Has anyone else been having the hardest time adding site tags to the map? The google map keeps switching information around on me, losing data … it’s driving me batty.
