And for some Monday morning amusement, here’s some completely depthless waste-related news from Austin

Those are Crappy Names for a Waste Department (NPR, 2/6/2011)

The city of Austin, Texas, may have bitten off more than it can chew, swallow and — well, you know what comes next.

Austin’s Solid Waste Services Department decided it needed a new name. Something with a bit more panache. So they put it to the people of Austin in an online vote — and so far, their overwhelming choice seems to be “The Fred Durst Society of the Humanities and Arts.”

Fred Durst is the frontman for the hard-rock band Limp Bizkit. And while folks in Austin might think their music shares much in common with solid waste, the city may have trouble following the will of the people on this one.

City of Austin public information specialist Jennifer Herber tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer that the name will ultimately be decided by the city manager and the poll was just for “public input.”

“Obviously we’re going to go with what makes the most sense for Austin and for the department,” she says. So Fred Durst may be, well, — SOL.

The polling ends Thursday, February 10.
