“Why being ‘less bad’ is no good”
This was a very bleak reading – all the things that we think are helpful- recycling, buying fleece clothing from re-cycled bottles, paper re-use, turn out to cause other problems. ” the best way to reduce any environmental impact is not to recycle more, but to dispose and produce of less”. Which is of course contrary to our capitalist system. I think the problem lies with corporate greed and the bottom line – it’s less profitable to find ways to lessen the environmental impact and it’s only because of stringent regulation that companies have copped to their toxic waste. And too many consumers have bought into the hype of the newest/cheapest/exclusive must have commodities.
